What Would Happen if You Fitted Four Completely Different Tyres to Your Car?
One winter tyre. One summer tyre. One all-season tyre. One all-terrain tyre.
It sounds like the setup for a terrible joke...
But what would actually happen?
Would the car still drive? Would it be dangerous? And would modern safety systems simply sort it all out?

First Things First... Yes, It Would Drive
Assuming all four tyres were the correct size, load rating and speed rating for the vehicle, the car would almost certainly move perfectly happily down the road.
At lower speeds, you might even think everything feels fairly normal.
But the faster you drive, or the more demanding the conditions become, the more obvious the differences would be.
That's because every tyre would be trying to do a completely different job.
Meet the Four Tyres
Imagine your car has one of each:
Winter Tyre
Winter tyres use a softer rubber compound with thousands of tiny sipes designed to grip in cold, wet and snowy conditions.
In warm weather, however, they tend to feel softer and less precise.

Summer Tyre
Summer tyres are designed for warmer temperatures and provide excellent grip on dry and wet roads during spring, summer and early autumn.
They're typically the sharpest and most responsive tyre on a warm day.
All-Season Tyre
An all-season tyre sits somewhere between the two.
It's designed to cope reasonably well throughout the year but isn't specifically optimised for extreme summer heat or harsh winter weather.
All-Terrain Tyre
All-terrain tyres are built for loose surfaces like gravel, mud and tracks.
On the road, they're often noisier, less precise and can take longer to stop because the large tread blocks move around more under braking.

So... What Would It Feel Like?
The Steering Would Feel Strange
Each tyre has its own sidewall stiffness and grip characteristics.
One front tyre might respond instantly to steering inputs while the other feels slower and softer.
Instead of the car turning as one, each corner is effectively giving a slightly different answer.
The steering could feel vague, inconsistent or even pull slightly to one side.
Braking Would Be Less Predictable
Every tyre generates grip differently.
During heavy braking, one tyre may begin to lose grip well before another.
Your ABS would likely be working much harder than normal, constantly trying to balance the different levels of traction across the car.
The result?
Longer stopping distances and less confidence during emergency braking.
Corners Become... Interesting
Here's where things become genuinely unpredictable.
Normally, all four tyres work together to provide balanced handling.
With four completely different tyres, every corner behaves differently.
One tyre may grip brilliantly.
Another may begin sliding.
Another may flex before biting into the road.
Instead of predictable handling, the car constantly changes its balance depending on:
- Road temperature
- Whether the road is wet or dry
- The speed you're travelling
- How hard you're cornering
Even modern stability control systems can only work with the grip available.
They can't create grip where there isn't any.
But They're All Legal Tyres...
That's true.
Individually, each tyre could be perfectly legal.
The problem isn't that any one tyre is unsafe.
The problem is that they were never designed to work together.
Vehicle manufacturers spend years developing suspension and steering systems around tyres that behave consistently.
Mixing four completely different types means the car is no longer responding in the way it was designed to.
Imagine Running a Race Like This...
Think of it like trying to run 100 metres wearing:
- One hiking boot
- One running shoe
- One football boot
- One flip-flop
Technically, you could still run.
You'd probably make it to the finish.
But every step would feel different, you'd struggle to change direction quickly, and if someone shouted "Duck!" halfway through, there's a fair chance you'd end up on the floor.
Cars work in much the same way.
Each tyre plays a part in how the vehicle accelerates, brakes and corners. If every tyre behaves differently, the whole car becomes less balanced and less predictable.
So Should You Mix Tyres?
It's generally recommended that tyres match across each axle as a minimum, with the same size, construction and similar levels of wear.
Ideally, all four tyres should be the same make and model, particularly on modern vehicles where handling and electronic safety systems rely on consistent grip levels.
