Gerry Burke, a spokesman for Adrian Flux insurers, suggested that incidents such as pothole damage could go untraced until difficulties occur further down the line.

He stated: "The most common problems we see are tyre damage, wheel damage and suspension problems."

Mr Burke went on to observe: "You can carry on driving for a while without realising there's something wrong."
