Those looking to make any journeys by car over the coming days may wish to check their tyres before setting off.
As the country is predicted to be hit with more bad weather, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) advises drivers to take caution.
Consequently, those considering driving in flood conditions were advised to avoid going in water which is "obviously too deep or flowing too quickly".
Drivers who do have to make their way through flooded areas were urged to drive in the highest possible section of the road.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, states: "If the journey is unavoidable, motorists should take extra precautions when dealing with severe surface conditions."
He adds that torrential rain can cause "visibility problems as the car mists up in seconds".
Checking tyres could also be advised as the Met Office pointed out that Cumbria and western Scotland have been the areas hit the worst by heavy rain and gale-force winds over recent days.
