Road users 'should be careful in the dark'

Safety car drivers dark eveningsFrom checking tyres to indicating at junctions – vehicle handlers have a responsibility to be safe.

Now, an organisation is urging pedestrians and cyclists to their bit as well to help reduce the number of mishaps on the road.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) is encouraging those on foot or bike to make themselves extra visible to motorists now that the evenings are becoming darker.

Drivers are also being asked to be extra alert to people out and about.

Tom Mullarkey, Rospa chief executive, explained data shows that more walkers are injured and killed in the afternoon and early evening than in the morning.

"Pedestrians and cyclists who … may be travelling home from work or school in the dark should ensure they can be seen," he said.

"Motorists [also] need to watch their speed and keep an extra look out for vulnerable road users."

Ensuring tread depth is at the legal limit can also be important during the autumn and winter months, to reduce the risk of skidding.ADNFCR-2762-ID-19422739-ADNFCR
