Once the scrappage scheme has come to an end it could be likely that CO2 emissions will begin to creep up again.
A way to help lower the amount of carbon dioxide released from vehicles is to ensure that tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure.
Clean Green Cars noted that the average new vehicle CO2 levels fell by 5.5 per cent in the first nine months of the year.
The organisation pointed out if this continued, the EU would be able to meet its targets by 2012.
However, the company suggested the success may not carry on too far into the future.
"Once scrappage incentives come to an end, CO2 figures will start to rise unless the industry works very hard to maintain progress," it said.
"Politically, it would be very difficult for the industry to explain why its CO2 figures are going up just as EU targets come into force."
Not only does blowing tyres up to the recommended pressure reduce the amount of green house gases emitted by a vehicle, it also helps prolong the lives of this vital car part.
