Round 2 of the 2010 British Drift Championship held at Silverstone, May 23 ended with victory for both Team Japspeed drivers Danny Eyles and Shane Lynch taking first and second respectively.
“Putting the Japspeed Maxxis S15 on the top step of the podium at Silverstone was a dream come true, but knowing that I had the best tyres on the market gave me so much confidence all day long to run inches apart from the opposition”, said Danny.
“The tyres were soaking up the track heat to give maximum grip, even with the 450lb/ft torque from the Japspeed monster going through them, and I felt it was always going to be a winning combination at the home of British motorsport”.
For anyone not familiar with the sport, Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motorsport where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels through turns, while maintaining vehicle control and a high exit speed. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle prior to the corner apex, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa), and the driver is controlling these factors. It's all about putting on the best show visually. Extrememly high powered cars travelling sideways more often than straight and billowing the all important resulting tyre smoke!!
Maxxis have developed the already widely respected road going MAZ-1 to cater for the needs of drift competition. The tyre is manufactured from a specially developed high temperature silica compound to offer more grip as the heat rises without delaminating or chunking but simply wears until no tread is left visible. The MAZ-1 is well known for its real ability to create the impressive volume of smoke so admired by crowds and judges.
