Drivers 'should avoid second-hand tyres'

Second hand car tyres safetyBuying second-hand tyres in an effort to save money could prove to be a false economy for drivers, it has been suggested.

MyTyres points out that while some motorists may consider buying partly-worn tyres, such products could have internal casing damage and other problems that could flare up in the event of a sudden deflation.

Doing so could also mean that motorists put themselves and other road users at risk while on the wheel.

And although the publication points out that retailers are obliged to ensure that part-worn tyres have a minimum tread of at least two mm, drivers should find out for themselves if this is the case.

To ensure that they stay safe, the firm points out motorists should stick to the sole use of new tyres.

However, those fitting new tyres may be interested in a recent Michelin study revealing more than a third of drivers take to the wheel with tyres deemed to be in dangerous condition.

Peter Snelling, head of communications for Michelin, adds that tyres "should not be taken for granted".
