Mobile Tyron Band Installs and Caravan Puncture Repairs in Haydock

Tyron bands, you may have heard or seen that word crop up on forums or when talking to other caravan owners. But, what are they and what do they do?

The biggest thing they do is provide an additional layer of safety for those travelling. As the name implies, they keep the Tyre On in the event of a sudden pressure loss. If you’ve ever had a puncture whilst driving, you know what it feels like to drive on a deflating and then suddenly flat tyre. The steering becomes heavy and, if you’ve been going fast and driven on the flat for a whilst the tyre will eventually fall off of the rim as said rim has sliced through the sidewalls setting the tyre free! Tyron stops the tyre from coming off the rim completely allowing you to pull to the side of the road or, a safe location. During the drive, the tyre will probably become damaged beyond repair but, it’s a better situation than having a tyre flapping around the wheel arch causing more damage – in a worst-case situation, we’ve had reports of caravan flipping due to this. Not something anyone wants!

Can you repair punctures on tyres with Tyron Bands?

Yes! Although, it’s a little more complex than that. The first question is, is safe to repair? You can see the requirements here. Secondly, does the technician have the specialist equipment and experience to be able to work on tyres with Tyron Bands installed? Unfortunately, it’s not just a case of breaking the bead of the tyre and taking the tyre off. You’ve got to push down all of the tyre, remove the Tyron Band and then you can take the tyre off and perform the repair. Installing the tyre is essentially the same process but reversed.

How do I know if I have Tyron Bands installed?

Again, it’s not a straight forward answer. As the bands are inside of the tyre, you won’t be able to tell for definite without taking the tyre off. There could be clues such as; Tyron safety stickers on the wheel (these will be a silver reflective sticker with a red T), you may have a Tyron care kit which includes a safety manual and an extra-long Allen key.

I want Tyron Bands installed onto my caravan, how do I go about this?

Well, you first need to locate a dedicated dealer! You’ll need your tyre size (there are different sized bands for different wheel sizes) and also if you’re caravan, motorhome or car is equipped with a TPMS system. TPMS, being Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is a system that continually monitors the tyre’s pressure. Although quite rare on caravans, we are starting to see more and more installed onto the newer ones. Usually it’s an aftermarket system that is installed in the tyres but, we have also seen valve caps installed. These caps are not a problem as they wont effect the band. However, if sensors are installed into the wheels, you will need to ask for a one inch smaller size and a TPMS bracket. The Tyron Band is installed where a TPMS unit would sit so, the bracket is used to stop interference!
