Common Causes of Punctures

Tyre punctures can happen at any time, often when you least expect it. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Nails and Screws – Sharp objects on the road can pierce the tyre, causing a slow or sudden deflation.

  • Potholes – Hitting a pothole can pinch the tyre against the wheel rim, resulting in a puncture.

  • Sharp Debris – Broken glass, metal shards, or other road debris can also damage tyres.

  • Valve Leaks – A worn or damaged valve can lead to gradual air loss.

Hometyre's Puncture Repair Process

Whenever Hometyre attends a puncture repair appointment, a replacement tyre is always carried just in case the damaged tyre is beyond repair. This ensures the customer can get back on the road as quickly as possible.

The technician will begin by locating the locking wheel nut and raising the vehicle. After removing the valve core from the TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), the technician removes the tyre from the alloy wheel. If the puncture is within BSAU 159 standards, it can be safely repaired.

The technician will then remove the nail or sharp object and drill a 6mm hole through the punctured area. The inner surface of the tyre is smoothed, and vulcanising cement is applied to ensure the patch adheres securely. A mushroom-shaped patch is inserted through the hole and sealed firmly into place, with a specialist sealer applied for added security.

Afterwards, the technician will replace the old valve with a new one, refit the tyre to the alloy wheel, and rebalance it. The wheel is then reattached, and the bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specifications. Before leaving, the technician will check the tread depth and tyre pressures on all four tyres to ensure the vehicle is safe and roadworthy. A detailed tyre report is then completed for the customer.
