Runflat tyres as fitted to BMW, Mini and many other makes have particularly stiff sidewalls to enable them to be safely driven at low speed for a short distance. Not all garages are able or confident about changing runflats but Hometyre vans have all the right equipment and Hometyre technicians are specially trained to fit new runflat tyres. The distance which can be safely driven on a deflated runflat depends on the load being carried. If you have a puncture or blowout with a runflat you should consult your car's manual.
Caravans and campervans cover less mileage than an average car or van so there is usually a good deal of tread on the tyre and this can be misleading on the general condition of the tyre so look for signs of cracking on the sidewall and also look at the Date code on your tyre which will tell you how old your tyre is.
So if your tyres are five years old or over we suggest you consider replacing them soon so give us a call. 0800 783 93 10.
Hometyre is also an authorised distributor and fitter of TYRON bands. You should consider these safety devices as they prevent a deflated tyre detaching itself from the wheel of your caravan or trailer.
You have just 4 small patches of rubber keeping you on the road. Don't leave it too late before discovering that your tyres need replacing. Check tyre pressures regularly - you can find the correct pressures printed on a label or plate on the drivers door frame or in the handbook. All your tyres must have at least 1.6mm of tread over the central portion, but for safety we recommend at least 3mm. There is an idea for easily checking your ttread depth below. Tyres deteriorate over time, so check for cracks and signs of perishing. Lastly if you have hit a pothole or kerb then check the tyre for cuts, splits or damage.
If you are unsure Hometyre will be pleased to offer advice or look at our maintenance tips.
Use a Twenty Pence to Check your Tread.
It’s not difficult to check the tread depth of your tyres. Simply use a twenty pence coin from your pocket. The outer band of a twenty pence gives a good indication of tread depth. Insert the twenty pence into the main tread groves on your tyres. You should do this on a few areas of each tyre across the main central section. If the outer band cannot be seen and is below the main surface of the tyre your tyres have adequate tread depth. If it can be seen you may need to change your tyres. You should have them checked by a qualified tyre specialist.
If you are unsure whether you have enough tread left on your tyres or have any questions concerning your tyres contact Hometyre...
Even new tyres are not perfect and when fitted to your wheels it is usually necessary to fit some balancing weights so that the wheel runs evenly. Unbalanced wheels will give vibrations or 'lumpy' running at certain speeds. Balance weights are fixed to the wheels when new tyres are fitted to equalise the weight of the rubber on the rim so you get a smooth ride. Occasionally these weights fall off and then the wheel needs rebalancing. There are many other mechanical reasons why you might experience vibration but have the balance checked first.
If your vehicle is veering to the right or left and your front tyres are wearing on the inner or outer edges you could well have a wheel alignment problem - meaning that your wheels are toeing in or toeing out more than they should. Sometimes this is called tracking. This can often easily be rectified using our laser wheel alignment system.
Give us a call on 0800 783 9310 if you experience any of the above symptoms and we will visit you at your home or place of work and rectify the problem.
Do you know if your vehicle needs a locking wheel nut adaptor so your wheel can be removed when replacing your tyres or repairing a puncture and if so the location of the adaptor? Try looking in the glove box or the boot with the spare wheel.
If yours has gone missing, don't worry our vans are equipped with special equipment which allows our technician to safely remove the locking wheel nuts. Don't leave it until you are stranded with a puncture or blow-out!
